State Tartans

I was snooping around the Scottish Tartan Authority web site last night. There are a growing number of USA state tartans. I am not sure how easy it is to get them but they are registered. Here is the current list:

Arizona, Arkansas, States of Carolina, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaiian, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa (has two), Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota (has two), Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont (has two), Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin.

So you guys living or from those states get your kilts and get out in the world.

  1. Here in Texas we have the Blue Bonnet Tartan. I am looking to have 15 ounce made, probably sometime early next year. I believe the mill is House of Edgar, and for some reason it has to be made by a Scottish Kilt Maker. That makes it a $400 Kilt.

I find that many mills do not have custom state tartan on hand, so they hit for a little more to crank some out. So you are paying nearly $90 a yard. If they have it laying around it tends to be closer to $60. Then if you find clearance, you can find tartan closer to $20. It's my personal opinion that many want to spend the big money on family tartan, for the ones who are eaten up with ancestry. Spending the same for State would be rare.
